This month has presented something of a learning curve for me with my Aikido development. Recently we completed the final movements of the Kihon Dosa (basic movements) and have been able to put some of these techniques into practice on the training mats.
It was very satisfying to be able to use the techniques practically. I felt a sense of making progress and actually learning and retaining something.
I think it’s easy sometimes, particularly in the early stages of any martial art, to believe you’re just mimicking Sensei without really understanding or appreciating what you’re doing.
This is certainly something I felt initially, but now I believe I have turned that corner and am starting to understand the practical nature of techniques.
It was a particular high for me, a realisation really that I was making progress – it’s a great motivator to continue.
However, there have been lows too. At the start of the month my Kamae (basic stance) was still off-kilter, my body’s (or rather my hips’) refusal to face forward was causing me problems and frustration. At these times you wonder whether or not you’ll ever get it right, what if my body just won’t go that way?
Andy has been helpful in this though. His reassurance and practical experience helps to put things in perspective.
Not all techniques come automatically and there are times when doubt and disappointment dog your thoughts.
The key is just to keep going and believe you will overcome them. I said I wanted a challenge when I started this journey. What kind of a challenge would it be if it was easy?
